It’s easy to find a coach… using the “FIND A COACH” area of the site. You can explore coaches by primary practice focus – business, life, or sports. To make it even easier, we have identified several common options / goals that individuals, businesses and players bring to the coaching relationship. For example, if you are looking for greater balance between work and life… select the option “work-life balance” and see all the coaches that support a question/goal. You can also narrow your search using geographic and pricing parameters.
Each coach has set up a profile that will show you more about their practices and specialties. You can peruse their articles and videos as well as reviews and testimonials from other clients. To connect with a coach, simply click the button CONTACT COACH and you can send a private message that will be relayed directly to that coach and they will follow up accordingly.
What is coaching
The field of coaching is one of the fastest growing professional occupations in the world. And, it’s one that is sometimes difficult to define – yet – those who have worked with coaches almost always benefit from the process as they reach further into their goals and visions. The process of coaching – generally speaking – is focused upon helping an individual or business achieve goals. Because it is goal-oriented, it tends to focus on future options and choices.
For the individual, it may include an examination of core values, practicing life balance, exploring assets of age and experience, and identifying purpose and passion, resolving the experience of loss, designing new goals centered around “wholeness” and “balance”, and creating plans for moving ahead.
For the business, it’s often about fostering a productive leadership development process and creating powerful, purposeful leaders. It’s about charting attainable courses to strategic goals, training in the management of change, and creating a productive working culture that accepts change as an environmental state and not a singular event.
In either case, it’s the client who creates the context to the work and it’s the coach that lends structure as you define, refine and ultimately chart a course to reaching those goals. The coach will access various tools, resources, and methods – like the many we offer here at Better Life Training – to help them guide you along your journey. Coaches use tools like assessments, journals, self-exploration and team exercises, and other methods based on the unique circumstances presented by each client and each goal.
Part of the work in coaching often involves an exploration into barriers that may inhibit progress and success. When these present, the coach helps find context and guides the client through options and ideas. In all cases, the client (the business or the individual) is the one who ultimately evaluates the benefits and consequences and draws their own conclusions regarding the best, appropriate actions. In the coaching-client relationship, the client makes their own choices and takes full responsibility for their decisions and actions.
What is Virtual coaching
Virtual Coaching is a way to connect or coach via an online chat or email. This is a great way to have accountability with your client, player or team without being face-to-face. Many of the Better Life Training coaches offer virtual coaching, enabling you to more easily accommodate coaching into your schedule - day, evenings or weekends - and from wherever you may be.
Tips on how to find the right coach
So you think you are interested in working with a coach? That’s a great commitment you want to make… and you’ve come to the right place to find a coach! Coaching can be a highly effective experience to help you achieve your goals – and finding the right coach is an important first step… let’s see if we can help you here!
The first thing you should do is find the category that best suits your goal. If you are working on a personal matter then a life coach may be the right way to go… if you are really honing in on some work/leadership goals, then a business coach with expertise may be a better fit.
What’s Important to You…
Many coaches have attended a certification course to receive specific training in their field of coaching. While anyone can create a coaching practice, and many do from their experiences, a certified coach has signed on to learn specific methods, models, theories all designed to help them help you work through your goals and questions. So think through how important training and education are in your selection process.
Coaching is a trusting relationship, and you should feel comfortable sharing openly with that person. The stronger that bond, the more effective the work (in our experience). To this end, we always suggest that you connect with a couple of coaches and spend some time with them.
Most all coaches will give you between fifteen and thirty minutes (or more) to chat about your goals and understand if there is a good fit to your needs and their expertise.
It’s all about you!
When you select your coach, always remember that you “own” the space of work. Coaches aren’t, by trade, encouraged to tell people what to do. The goal is to help you find the path or choice that serves and suits you… and you are the only who can determine that! Coaches are here to help you think through options and ideas and help you uncover barriers that are inhibiting your ability to get where you want to go. You are the one in control of your choices and actions every step of the way.
So explore your options, be selective in your choices, and then get ready to learn more about you and get closer to those goals!
How does coaching differ from therapy?
… one of the most common questions asked of both professionals. Let’s explore a bit.
Training and Expertise Counselors and therapists have had extensive training and are licensed in their respective fields. These are health care services where often the provider is not only able to diagnose mental health issues, but may be able to prescribe medications and other treatments to support care as needed.
Coaches, by contrast, may have participated in advanced training or certification programs, but are not recognized or licensed health care professionals. You may even come across a coach that has not participated in a program, but applies their experiences in work or life as a basis for their practice.
In the coaching relationship, it’s the coaches’ ethical responsibility to monitor the boundary between therapy and coaching and to create awareness with the client as to when the conversations are becoming more therapeutic in nature and may require trained medical guidance. Coaches are not trained to diagnose mental or emotional conditions – only a licensed medical expert, such as a therapist, is qualified to make such determinations.
The Working Relationship Both coaches and therapists apply a knowledge and/or method(s) of exploring human behavior. The key distinction is how these methods may be applied to the client’s stated goals. In therapy, methods are commonly used to help explore specific aspects of a condition or disorder tied to mental wellness. The goal is to define a treatment course to help direct the client to live a more productive life in consideration of their conditions.
Coaching, by contrast tends to be focused on future goals and how to excel or achieve in life. Methods are used to help the client understand and appreciate their own abilities and talents, re-pattern behaviors and recurring actions that may inhibit progress, and generally create a higher sense of self and self- purpose as they reach toward their highest potential.
It is not always beneficial to the client to work with both a coach and therapist at the same time as these two professional may represent different perspectives of a similar situation and create an essence of confusion and/or conflict for the patient.
Using the Past to Guide the Future Both therapists and coaches explore the past, usually for two distinct purposes. The therapist is more likely to consider the past to understand how it may connect to the current emotional wellness of their patient. Part of the work between therapist and client may be to heal those pains. The coach, by contrast, explores the past to uncover behavior patterns and those “inner voices” that tend to create self-limiting beliefs. The coach will work with their client to understand how these patterns and beliefs continue to manifest in their adult choices and behaviors. It’s ultimately up to the client to determine if they want to change the patterns.
These patterns are often the outcome of the emotional “hurt” experienced… and it’s in the “hurt” where the therapist may focus their efforts to build a stronger emotional foundation. The coach, by contrast, helps the client redirect and shift to create new patterns that support and align with their life goals.
What is axiology?
Axiology is the philosophical study of value. The study dives into the notion of worth and value within the construct of business, sports, and personal development. Coaches who are certified in the concept are empowered to use various assessment and evaluation tools and focus in-depth conversations as to how an individual considers leadership, spiritual, and lifestyle values and how these influence their ability to meet or exceed their life goals. As a client working with a coach who is certified in Axiology, you may be able to hone in on the pathway to your goals and how your values may support or inhibit your progress and success.
Coaches often use this method and tools to help the individual pinpoint and contrast strengths, weaknesses, blind spots, and leverage points. Coaches find axiology an invaluable resource to help clients understand what might keep them from reaching their personal, professional, and/or fitness/wellness goals. As a coach certified in Axiology, you will be able to guide your clients through the intrinsic, extrinsic, and systemic responses and reactions to emotions, feeling as well as the response to external environment.
What are the different types of assessments?
The DISC Assessment is designed to help you grow as a brand. It allows you to have a better understanding of yourself and your audience in regards to the relationship that needs to be maintained in order for your brand to have unlimited potential. It is a way to harness emotional intelligence and increase the very important skill of interacting affectively with others, especially those who may have differing views. DISC is the universal standards of behavior. It can be defined by the ability to observe how others carry themselves and what that may mean in regards to their personality / behavior.
The Motivators Assessment helps you figure out why you behave the way you. What motivates us to cause x, y, or z actions? Once you understand this about yourself and your clients, you will have the ability to create a bond based upon morale. Once you acquire the awareness of the factors that drive a person’s actions, you will be able to keenly pick out what may cause conflict and attack that conflict earlier rather than later. This will allow for more seamless interactions between you and potential clients, which is how a brand is able to grow.
